IF, Rudyard Kipling

Rudyard Kipling's poem 'If' first appeared in his collection 'Rewards and Fairies' in 1909. The poem is inspirational, motivational, and a set of rules for 'grown-up' living. It contains mottos and maxims for life, and the poem is also a blueprint for personal integrity, behaviour and self-development.
The beauty and elegance of 'If' contrasts starkly with Rudyard Kipling's largely tragic and unhappy life. He was starved of love and attention and sent away by his parents; beaten and abused by his foster mother and later, the deaths of two of his children also affected him deeply.

Rudyard Kipling achieved fame quickly, based initially on his first stories and poems written in India. Significantly, Kipling turned down many honours offered to him including a knighthood, Poet Laureate and the Order of Merit, but, in 1907, he was the first English writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Some of other most popular works are the story collection The Jungle Book, 1894; the spy novel Kim, 1901; the short story The Man Who Would Be King, 1888; or poems Gunga Din, 1892 . In addition, several os his works have been made into films.

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise...

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

todos la pierden y te echan la culpa;
pero al mismo tiempo tienes en cuenta su duda;

Si puedes soñar y no dejar que los sueños te dominen;
si puedes pensar y no hacer de los pensamientos tu objetivo;
y tratar a estos dos impostores de la misma manera;

y no dejar de escapar nunca una palabra sobre tu pérdida;
y si puedes obligar a tu corazón, a tus nervios y a tus músculos

o caminar entre Reyes y no cambiar tu manera de ser;
si todos los hombres cuentan contigo pero ninguno demasiado;

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING: Movie Trailer. Watch more top selected videos about: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Liv Tyler

J.R.R. TOLKIEN
   John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein in 1892. He moved to England with his family in 1895. In 1900, he studies in Oxford and finishes in 1915. In 1916, he sailed to France to fight in the First World War.  In 1995, he published 3 books called The lord of the rings. He died in Bournemouth in 1973.
   People used to know him because of that book, but now, he is also even more popular  because Peter Jackson recorded three movies about their books.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING
   The book begins in a Ship, where Bilbo Bolson´ party takes place. There are a lot of people, but suddenly, he disappears with a magic ring. The wizard Gandalf, Bilbo´s friend, knew his secret and there was a small argument with him, because he refused to give the ring to Frodo. Bilbo gives the ring to Frodo and Gandalf tells him the history of the ring. He tells Frodo that they are going to meet in Rivendell, where the fate of the ring will be decided. So Frodo, Sam, Pippin and Merry, agree to go there.
They enter in the Old Forest to avoid the paths, but they are trapped by Old Man Willow, however, a mysterious man named Tom Bombadil saves them. A few days later, the hobbits arrive at the Barrow-downs, where the Barrow-wights captured them, but Tom Bombadil appeared again and saves them, giving them weapons to  defend themselves during their journey.
Once in Bree, the hobbits come to the inn “The Prancing Pony” to sleep there. There, they meet two friends of Gandalf, called Aragorn and Nob who escape when the Nazgul attack the inn that night. The next day, accompanied by Aragorn, the hobbits leave for Rivendell, but in the trip, the Nazgul attack them and hurt  Frodo seriously.  After fighting, they escape to Rivendell with Glorfindel.
Days later, Frodo awoke in Rivendell. They must go to a council. There, Elrond says that the ring must be destroyed in the fires of Orodruin. That mission is going to be carried out  by “the Fellowship of the Ring” which is formed by Frodo, Sam, Pippin, Merry, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and Boromir.
The Community begins the journey. Through Hollin,  they reach the Misty Mountains and definitely go to the Mines of Moria. When they arrive at the gate of the mines, a Kraken appears and attacks them, but the community runs into the mines. They come to the House of Mazarbul, where a lot of orcs attack them. After killing a few, the Community tries to escape and reach the bridge of Khazad Dûm. There  a Balrog, who Gandalf threw over the bridge, appeared again but as he fell, he took the wizard with his whip.
Feeling sad because of Gandalf´s death, the characters come to the forest of Lothlorien, where some elves help them giving three elven boats to sail along the river Anduin. When they reach the meadows of Parth Galen, Frodo turned away and Boromir follows him.  He tries to convince him not to destroy the Ring and takes him to his city to defend Sauron.  After the refusal of the hobbit, Boromir tries to take the Ring and Frodo runs away with Sam in one of the boats.

SHAKESPEARE AND THE SONNET 29

When, in disgrace with Fortune and men's eyes,         Cuando sufro agravios de Fortuna,
I all alone beweep my outcast state,                            Lloro a solas mi suerte desdichada
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,         Y lanzo al cielo sordo gritos vanos
And look upon myself and curse my fate,                   Y maldigo, afligido, mi destino,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,                  Codiciando de éste la esperanza,
Featured like him, like him with friends possessed,     De aquél los amigos, el semblante,
Desiring this man's art and that man's scope,              Y de otros ya el talento o el ingenio,
With what I most enjoy contented least;                    Mal provisto de cuanto más valoro.
Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising       Más sumido en tan negras reflexiones,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,              De pronto pienso en ti, y entonces canto
Like to the lark at break of day arising                   (Cual alondra elevándose en la aurora)
From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate:       De la tierra sombría himnos al cielo.
For thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings  Con tu amor recordado soy tan rico
That then I scorn to change my state with kings.

    Certainly, the sonnet 29 is one of the best poems Shakespeare has ever written. In this poem he doesn´t seem to like his fate because he is not like other rich and important men. He feels sad, annoyed and tired of life. However, when he thinks about the woman he is in love with, he forgets those problems and gets happier and more cheerful. In my opinion, Shakespeare is trying to explain that LOVE is more important than any other thing and I agree with him.

DO YOU KNOW HARRY POTTER?

Harry Potter is an orphan and lives with his aunts and his unbearable cousin Dudley. Harry feels very sad and lonely, until one day he receives a letter that would change his life forever. One day he is told that has been accepted as a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. From that moment, Harry´s luck gives a spectacular turn. In this school he learns spells, magic tricks and tactics against trickery. He becomes the school champion of Quidditch, a kind of basketball played in the air with broomsticks, and makes a lot of good friends, but also frightening enemies.

Joanne Rowling was born in Yate, Gloucestershire, the 31st of July, 1965. She is famous because she´s the creator of Harry Potter and his fantasy series. She had a daughter  with her portuguese husband, but later they separated.
Her name is only Joanne Rowling, but her books weren´t sold because people didn´t buy fantastic stories written by a girl. So, she decided to write two initials. She chose her grandma´s name, Kathleen.
Joanne supports charities against the Sclerosis, and she donates approximately $1,2 million  to them every year.
